About Bulgaria
Borovets

Borovets is the oldest ski resort in Bulgaria, situated on the northern slopes of Rila mountain, at the feet of peak Musala (2925 m), the highest mountain peak on the Balkan peninsula. Borovets stands at 1350 m above sea level, amidst centuries-old pinetree forest, located 73 km south from Sofia and 125 km northwest from Plovdiv. The nearest town is Samokov at a distance of about 10 km.

At the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century Borovets, whose name at the time was Chamkoria, was hunting estate of the royal family where royal palace was build as well as many other residences and hunting cottages that belonged to many aristocratic families at the time. That in fact is the palace where in 2002 Princess Kalina (daughter of ex-prime minister Simeon Sax-Coburg-Gotha) got married.

Today Borovets is one of the most popular ski-resorts in Bulgaria which offers 15 ski tracks (2 blue, 9 red and 4 black) with total length of 40 km and ascending to a total height of 2560 m. The ski tracks are divided in three main areas namely: Sitnyakovo, Yastrebets and Markhudzhika. There are tracks for every taste, from beginner to intermediate to professional. The resort also offers one of the best biathlon tracks in the world as well as coditions for snowboarding and ski-jump. The ski-tracks are operational from December to April and some snow cannons skilfully positioned along the tracks, help with the coverage in the rare occasions when the snow is insufficient. Borovets was twice host of ski-contests from the Alpine Skiing World Cup tournament.

The lift infrastructure of the resort is very well developed by drag and chair lifts. All ski lifts are open from 09.00 to 16.30. A recently completed 200-meter carpet lift takes the skiers from ski center Markudzhika to the upper station of the gondola lift "Yastrebets"; and the widened 10 km long Musala Pathway provides an easy way to return to the resort. There are hotels from all categories here that offer swimming pools, saunas, restaurants, bars and many other facilities. Borovets is also praised from the fans of the summer tourism - it is starting point for many field trips in Rila mountain.
